PP Presentation Script
Didn’t know what I wanted to do- so decided to refine what I didn’t want to do.
I decided to create a list of things I like and don’t like, with the aim to dilute and refine until I figure out what I want to do.
I knew I didn’t want to work on briefs that I found boring, wanted to be engaged with the work i was creating
Or work on anything for clients that wasn’t paid, dangerous route to go down. Want to build confidence enough to aproach paid work.
Didnt want to be told what to work on, looking for guidance, not dictated.

The first big stem towards my practice was working digitally,
Previously based heavily on ink> moved the ideas to digital
Previously based heavily on ink> moved the ideas to digital
Loved the convenience of working digitally, and the aesthetic it allowed. Gave me the oportunity to explore broader subject themes through opening up my creativity (easier tools) took ideas from ink work and applied them digitally- grey tones + textures
I was producing much more work, and I was much happier with what I was making overall.
Computers on the yes list.
Through developing my work digitally- I inevitably moved on to working with type and graphic design+ layouts. Something I really enjoyed + wanted to learn more about- so much so that I based a lot of my COP work around this.
My use of type and layout improved a lot and i really enjoyed working with it.
I feel my work had a more finished look to it, especially in layout briefs like penguin, work looked infinitely better.

Work took on a much simpler aesthetic, very shape based and refined. With an emphesis on type. Lead to explore yorkshire brief- which was one of my favourites to work on,
I loved the finished look of the images I was making, and the ability to lay out my own work made things much easier, and added another string to my bow in terms of design work- something clients might be looking for?
Graphic design on the yes list- this followed through to spark my interest in products and packaging
Started to look for briefs based around this. Allowed me to explore both illustration + graphic design + typography,
I love working with products + packaging, allows me to use both illustration + GD. allows using tools discovered about marketing + advertising through COP studies. Lots of professional applications = lots of potential work.
Once I felt my work was at a place where I felt confident enough to go and find work...
As well as putting my work out there on Instagram/ Website etc,I wanted to be a bit more proactive about finding work and approaching clients so,.....
This lead to my first majoy paid brief for a company called natural bed company, the brief was large (45 sets of instructions) but paid very well.
Hated working on the brief, very dry and boring, not what I wanted to be doing. Began in november- in march I was told to start again (with payment) which i didn’t mind, but have ended up completely regretting saying yes as I now hate it- total grid.
Fairly happy with the way things are going, have been offered the opportunity by another major company to produce intructions for their products (they have about 200 pieces) hopefully dont want them all doing, starting in july.
I learned to not base the work I was doing purely based on the money, my own sanity is just as (if not more) important.
Abusing peoples work seemed to work in terms of finding paid briefs.
Or worded better… Proactively approach clients.
Also leaned to not take on briefs I had literally no interest in. shot myself in the foot there.
I didn’t want to be in a position where I had to rely solely on briefs that I have to go and find myself or wait for them to come to me, so I decided to set up a business where I can generate an income without having to constantly work on it.
Digital brush sales allow me to earn a passive income, to a global audience, without having to maintain heavily.
Making contacts who are promoting and talking about my products and work.
Low working time allows me to work on my illustration practice without having to worry about income or desperately finding work.

Wanted to create a short bio out of the discoveries I have made over the past 3 years about how I work.
So where is my current practice
My current practice is shape drive, and very digital. The course has lead me to have the confidence to continue to explore different ideas and themes, whilst maintaining a general voice and way of working.
Beginning to explore my personal interests through experimentation and making, rather than working to specific briefs.
After Uni
I have consolidated my practice to be as simple and refined as possible, allowing me to be able to…..
Continue to develop BrushUp to allow me to be able to work on my own illustration based work.
Questions?
1 Year Mission Statement
Over the year following university, I want to be in a position where I can choose/ work on briefs based on interest, rather than worrying about money. I am pretty much set for paid work up until around November, but I want to be able to work on the road past that.
My income from my brushes will be vital to this, and will be basically funding my travels, supplemented by my illustration work, done on the move. Hopefully this will allow me to work on a brief for a few hours a day, and participate in some marketing for BrushUp just to keep the interest topped up and income coming in.
I want to have an established list of contacts, which is already off to a great start through BrushUp, but I want to be able to use these as almost a foot in the door for my illustration work.

PP Evaluation
I have found this years PP module really beneficial, if not just to be able to reflect on where I see myself within the professional industry. I started the year really unaware of where I wanted to go within the industry, the module has allowed me to carve a path for where I can see myself post-uni. I have really enjoyed consolidating my existing practice into a consistently branded product, and the harmonious and cohesive nature of my own personal 'brand' has already given me the opportunity to work on live, paid briefs. The module has given me a lot of confidence within my own practice, through reflection and evaluation, and I have been consistently approaching clients and posting work to social media and my personal website.
Through PP, I have reached the chance to be able to earn a regular income completely passively, allowing me to focus more time on my illustration work. This was a realisation from research done through PP about where else I can sit within the industry, other than just as a practicing illustrator. One of my main aims for Level 6 was to put myself in a position where I am able to support myself without having to rely on illustrating alone, this is something I have managed to set up extremely effectively and am continuing to promote my own business through the information I have gained through PP.
The module has really taught me the value of marketing myself properly within the industry, and has lead me to set up a creating promo pack of business cards and other promotional items to be able to distribute and sell as part of my ongoing marketing efforts. It has also inspired me to produce promotional items for my business as well, creating goods with the businesses logo on to further promote it outside of social media and digital goods- this is something I will continue to work on moving past uni.
Another part of the module I found beneficial was the Hanbury Symposium. It was great to be able to meet and chat with real industry professionals and gain some knowledge and advice about where they think the industry is moving and how we can effectively get involved and establish ourselves within it. This also helped me gain the confidence to approach clients rather than waiting for them to come to me, which I have subsequently been able to get another live brief from. This will be vital experience in the real world as I will definitely have to go out and find work, especially without a huge reputation or social media following.
Over the course of PP I was able to take part in a number of paid live briefs, which I was able to get because of the tips and information learned through the module. PP also helped me with my negotiation skills, and when one of the live briefs needed renegotiating I had the confidence and information to be able to back myself to get a result that both me and the client were happy with. This will definitely help me as I begin to practice as an illustrator working on other live briefs.
More than anything, the module has allowed me to identify where my practice could sit within the industry. Through research into other practitioners, I have been able to identify why and how their practice works and what makes them a 'successful' illustrator. This has given me the confidence to be able to carry on with my own practice as we move on from uni and has allowed me to narrow down where I think I want my practice to go in the future.
Overall, the module has given me much more confidence and knowledge to be able to be prepared enough to go out on my own, with the support of others and not only work as a practicing illustrator, but to run my own successful business as well.

BrushUp Tutorials
In order to further promote my brushes and work, I have decided to create a video tutorial series on YouTube, where I will share my knowledge of Procreate and digital artwork, whilst demonstrating my own brushes, with a link provided in the description.
Here is a proposed intro for the videos, produced in AE. I'm really pleased with the outcome of the video, it's really simple and straight to the point, however the sound bites create some intrigue and a level of satisfaction.
